Hermanus Centre

About the Centre

The Hermanus Astronomy Centre covers the whole of the Overstrand from Rooi Els to Gans Baai which includes Pringle Bay, Hangklip, Betty's Bay, Kleinmond, Fisherhaven, Hawston, Vermont, Onrus, Sandbaai, Hermanus and Stanford.

We meet once a month on a Thursday closest to the new moon at the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) in Hermanus at 7.00 pm. For May & June it is the last Thursday of each month and for the remainder of this year it will be the third Thursday of each month. The structure of each meeting is an introduction of the Centres activities and events for the past month plus plans for the near future followed by a presentation from either a guest speaker or a club member on a subject of their choice. The presentation usually includes slides or DVD etc. The second half of the evening is taken up with star-gazing from the car park using the Centre's Dobsonian along with club members own telescopes, weather permitting. If the weather forecast is not very good then a 'back-up' second presentation is given by a committee member on a subject prepared in advance.

We are in the process of planning our Astronomy Education Centre with an Observatory and Amphitheatre in Hermanus.
