He, independently  from Henry Norris Russel, around 1913, had first put forward the idea that later became known as the Hertzsprung - Russel Diagram. [Mitton]
In 1973 Hertzsprung was the recipient of the Bruce Medal.


Summary:
The  first astronomer to be sent by Leiden to the
Union Observatory. (Approximately 1938)

History:
The  graph developed by him displays the magnitude (luminosity)  /colour (temperature/ spectral type) relationship between any sample of stars.
