| History: Eric Mervyn Lindsay had studied astrophysics under Shapley at Harvard. "Lindsay had been assistant at Boyden before being called home to his native Ireland to take charge of the ailing Armagh Observatory, where ... he revitalised the Observatory" [Copied from Moore, p.124.] He was a noted theorist as well as an observer; his main research was concerned with the Magellanic Clouds. Eric Lindsay was a man with ideas. His work at Boyden with the Magellanic Clouds had shown him the importance of southern stations and Boyden was an ideal site for a new telescope of the kind needed for this sort of work. Due to his influence the ADH telescope was installed at Boyden. He was a close friend of Patric Moore - who acted as Director of the Armagh Planetarium between 1965 and 1968. Career: Studied at Harvard. Assistant Observer at Boyden. (? - 1930?) Director of Armagh Observatory in Ireland. (1930? - ?) Personal: Born in Ireland. 1972: Died |
