Description: Danjon prismatic astrolabe (4 inch). This
instrument came to the Cape
Observatory on loan from the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux.
It was installed in 1964. The purpose was for a special program to check
the systematic accuracy of the fundamental system of star positions
between -4 and -64 degrees. The program operated between 1965 and 1969.
Approximately 1000 stars were selected from the SRS
project. A byproduct of this work was to determine the latitude and
longitude from each night's observations and to report the results to
the International Polar Motion Service and the Bureau International
de l'Heure. |
