Rozenhof:
When Fallows arrived at the Cape in order to choose a sight for the Observatory he initially rented a house at Garden Rozenhof (13 Kloof Street, Gardens) However the owner of the complex, Mr. van Breda, had a disagreement with Fallows and evicted him from the property. Fallows moved to Garden Zorg en Lust en then to the Observatory. Original in Rev John Campbells sketchbook in the South African Library. Source: Warner - Astronomers |

Hut:
Whilst staying at Garden Rozenhof Fallows needed protection for his portable instruments. The Acting Governor, Sir Rufane Donkin allowed Fallows to use a prefabricated wooden hut that was intended for the 1820 Settlers who went to Algoa Bay (modern day Port Elizabeth) The hut was erected in the yard of Garden Rozenhof. After Fallows was evicted the hut was taken down and later re-erected on the Observatory grounds, as shown by this pencil sketch by Thomas Bowler (c.1834). Original in the possession of the S.A.A.O.
