Joining the Society

Anyone with an interest in astronomy is welcome to join the Astronomical Society – our members include beginners, advanced amateurs and professional astronomers.

  • Joining ASSA as a Centre Member: The easiest way to join is to become a member of your nearest Centre. Please refer to the relevant Centre pages for details: Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, Hermanus, Garden Route, JohannesburgPretoria.
  • Joining ASSA as a Country Member: If you cannot conveniently join one of the Centres, you can join as a Country Member. Please complete the application form and send it, together with proof of payment, to the Membership Secretary. An entrance fee of R 50.00 is payable on joining, as well as an annual subscription of R 150.00, which includes a copy and delivery of the Sky Guide for the following year. The subscription year runs from July 01 to June 30, and the Sky Guide is expected to be published around 1st November each year.

Joining a Section of the Society

There is no formal process to follow to join a Section other than contacting the Director and stating your interest in contributing to the Section’s work.

ASSA POPIA Policy

By agreeing to the terms of ASSA membership registration / renewal form, the member / prospective member voluntarily consents and authorises the Society and / or the relevant Centre to process his / her personal information, which includes, to receive, record, organise, update, retrieve, consult and use such the member’s / prospective member’s information. This consent and authorisation further includes, the dissemination by means of transmission, distribution, to make available in any other form, linking as well as blocking, erasing or destruction. This consent is effective immediately upon application for membership / renewal of membership and can be withdrawn in the future or where requested or required in writing by an electronic mail addressed to the Society’s membership secretary. The member / prospective member understands that his / her personal information may only be processed if it is adequate, relevant and not excessive, given the purpose for which it is processed, and if processing occurs in accordance with the relevant provisions of the POPI Act and that the purpose of the processing of information must relate to a function and program activities of the Society and / or the relevant Centre. The member / prospective member further acknowledges that the Society and / or the relevant Centre collects and processes personal information pertaining to the proper functioning, management and governance of the Society and / or the relevant Centre as guided by best practices and relevant laws of the Republic of South Africa.
