Joining the Society

Anyone with an interest in astronomy is welcome to join the Astronomical Society – our members include beginners, advanced amateurs and professional astronomers.

Joining ASSA as a Centre Member

The easiest way to join is to become a member of your nearest Centre. Please refer to the respective Centre pages for Membership Application and other details: Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, Hermanus, Garden Route, Johannesburg, or Pretoria.

Joining ASSA as a Country Member

If you cannot conveniently join one of the Centres, you can join as a Country Member. You can join ASSA by completing the application form and sending it together with the proof of payment for your membership fee to the Membership Secretary.

An entrance fee of R 50.00 is payable on joining, as well as an annual subscription of R 150.00, which includes a copy and delivery of the Sky Guide for the following year. The subscription year runs from July 01 to June 30, and the Sky Guide is expected to be published around 1st November each year.

Joining a Section of the Society

There is no formal process to follow to join a Section other than contacting the Director and stating your interest in contributing to the Section’s work.
